Tips for Staying Active
Between work and life’s various responsibilities, it can become hard to stay active and exercise on a regular basis. This is especially true during winter, when many people simply feel like hibernating until the cold dissipates. Unfortunately, daily activity is a necessity that needs to be squeezed in to remain in good health. But how? Use these tips to stay motivated, even on the toughest days.
Team Effort
From running errands to running a marathon, it’s always easier to get up and go if you have company. Find someone with similar fitness goals so you can motivate and push each other. No one around when you need a boost? No problem! Grab a leash and take your dog for a walk around the neighborhood. Hey, we didn’t say your exercise buddy had to be human!
Diversity
Following the same workout routine every single week gets dull over time, which can cause you to skip out on exercise. If you’re sick of the same boring old gym routine, switch it up; take a dance class, plant some new bushes that can survive the winter, clean your house, window shop around the mall or basically do anything that gets you up off the couch.
Keeping Track
Do you find it easier to stay on track of your exercise if you keep track of it? Get a calendar specifically to monitor your activity. Mark every day that you get at least 20 minutes of physical activity with a black “X.” Mark every day that you miss out with a red “X.” Your goal should be to have no more than three red marks per month. Each red mark acts as a bit of motivation.
Distractions
Many people stray from exercising because it’s easy to grow bored while out jogging or lifting weights. But giving up isn’t the answer. Instead, distract your brain by listening to your favorite music, an audiobook or a podcast. You may even find yourself exercising for longer than you intended because you’ve become so caught up in listening.
