Resolve to Quit Smoking

Many people make New Year’s resolutions, whether they plan to shave off a few pounds or they want to spend more time working on hobbies. But some people are faced with a bigger challenge if they resolve to quit smoking. And while quitting is no easy task, it can vastly improve your health and reduce the chance of illness.

58.6 million people across the country smoke tobacco products, which is surprising since tobacco use is the largest preventable cause of disease. However, the desire to quit the habit has to come from you. But don’t think that means you’re alone in your endeavor.

Studies have shown that smokers have a much higher chance of successfully quitting when they have multiple channels of support. The encouragement of friends and family is one of the strongest forms of support for smokers who wish to kick the habit.

In addition, most health insurance policies now cover smoking cessation programs to provide additional support. You can also seek help from smoking-cessation hotlines, support groups, online forums and nicotine replacements patches and/or prescriptions.

Research has also shown that, on top of these various forms of support, another good method for quitting is to change your personal habits. For instance, find something else to do when you would normally take a smoke break, like call a friend or take a short walk.

Your doctor may also prove to be a valuable resource, as he or she may know of programs that can help you accomplish your goals. Your doctor can also prescribe smoking cessation medications, if that’s the route you wish to use.
