Types of Dental Insurance

child at the dentistAccording to the CDC, about 82% of children and about 61% of adults go to the dentist each year. Why the difference? Is it because adults don”t have problems with their teeth? Probably not. Maybe they are just busy or don”t like going to the dentist, or maybe they are afraid of the costs.

If cost is the reason you are not regularly going to the dentist, then we”d like to talk with you about dental insurance. The premiums are reasonable and can help you with many of the costs so you can regularly visit the dentist. What does dental insurance usually cover?

Preventive Care

Dental insurance covers cleaning and routine office visits, many times at 100% (depending on your policy). Most dental insurance plans do not require you to pay a deductible for preventive care. This includes X-rays every one or two years to make sure no cavities are forming. Why the 100% coverage? Insurance companies know that you need to go to the dentist twice a year to have your teeth cleaned and fix minor issues. It saves everybody money if you regularly care for your teeth, as opposed to waiting for a large, costly problem to overcome your mouth.

Basic Care

Dental insurance usually covers fillings anywhere from 70% to 80%. At this level of insurance, you will probably need to meet your deductible before an insurance company pays. Many insurance plans offer a deductible of $50. While it might seem better to have cavities filled one at a time on different visits, if you can have multiple cavities filled at one visit, you may only have to pay the deductible once.

Major Care

Root canals, crowns and dentures are usually covered around 50%. You will have to meet your deductible, and these procedures usually take more than one visit. But talk with your dentist and schedule these procedures in as few visits as possible.

Instead of ignoring your teeth, let”s talk and find you great dental insurance that you can afford. Then you can take care of your teeth year round.
