Medicare Supplement

Medicare Supplement

Medicare supplement insurance, also known as Medigap, is insurance that helps fill the gaps in your coverage. Original Medicare helps pay for covered health services and supplies but does not cover everything. Our agents at Active Insurance Agency LLC are here to help you receive coverage that fulfills your healthcare needs.

How Does Medicare Supplement Insurance Work?

A Medigap policy helps cover copayments, coinsurance and deductibles not covered by an Original Medicare policy, which includes Part A and Part B coverage. To carry Medigap coverage, there are a few things you need to be aware of:

  1. You must have Medicare Part A and Part B.
  2. A Medigap policy is different from a Medicare Advantage Plan, also known as Part C. Those plans are ways to get Medicare benefits, while a Medigap policy only supplements your Original Medicare benefits.
  3. You pay the private insurance company a monthly premium for your Medigap policy and the monthly Part B premium that you pay to Medicare.
  4. A Medigap policy only covers one person. If you and your spouse want Medigap coverage, you’ll have to buy separate policies.
  5. You can buy a Medigap policy from any licensed insurance company in your state to sell.
  6. Any standardized Medigap policy is guaranteed renewable even if you have health problems. The insurance company can’t cancel your Medigap policy as long as you pay the premium.
  7. Some Medigap policies sold in the past cover prescription drugs. But, Medigap policies sold after January 1, 2006, aren’t allowed to include prescription drug coverage. If you want prescription drug coverage, you can join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D). If you buy Medigap and a Medicare drug plan from the same company, you may need to make two separate premium payments. Contact the company to find out how to pay your premiums.
  8. It’s illegal for anyone to sell you a Medigap policy if you have a Medicare Advantage Plan—unless you’re switching back to Original Medicare.

What Does Medicare Supplement Insurance Not Cover?

While Medigap can help cover aspects of your health care not covered by your Original Medicare, there are things this policy will not cover, including:

  • Long-term care
  • Vision or dental services
  • Hearing aids
  • Eyeglasses
  • Private-duty nursing
